Joana’s father was a medical worker of some kind. He suddenly became ill and lost most of his hearing. He was let go from work and now can do little except sit at home. Whatever illness caused the hearing loss also left him very weak and in poor health. There is no financial support available for the disabled in Uganda.
Her mother works but earns very little beyond basic food working as a cleaning lady at the nursing school in Bwindi.
Joanna is an only child. She is currently in P.1 which she will finish during the summer. When school was still in session, she was one of the better students in her class. With a little encouragement – and the hope that comes with a sponsorship – the whole family will achieve some happiness after so much despair.
